Driving – Speed Limits
Speed Limits – cars and motorhomes
Unless you see a sign advising otherwise (a red circle with a number on a white background), the default speed limits for a car and motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are:
30 mph (about 50 km/h) Urban area (anywhere with street lighting)
Other single carriageway roads
Dual carriageway roads including motorways
You are expected to know what the general rule is
You’ll often meet a Derestricted sign rather than an explicit speed limit sign when coming out of a restricted area.
City centres and residential areas
Increasing there are 20 mph (30 km/h) limits in city centres and residential areas including most of Edinburgh except some radial routes. Sometimes these are advisory (a green rather than a red circle) but take the advice.
You might come across some Home Zones where the limit is 10mph.
Other vehicles
Please don’t get cross with other vehicles travelling more slowly: the bigger motorhomes, those towing anything including caravans, most commercial vehicles, buses, are limited to 50mph on single carriageway roads and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways
The heaviest lorries are limited to 40mph on single carriageway roads and 50 mph on dual carriageways.
